How to identify sugar.

                                                                    Welcome
Sugar.
How to identify and avoid sugar?.

Sugar appear in our foods with many names and in many forms. Listed below are the different
'names'  for sugar.Look out for these names if you want to avoid sugar. A food is likely to be high
in sugar if one of the terms appears first or second in the ingredient list or if several of them are
listed. No form of sugar is "more healthy" than white sugar.

                                             Sugar is also known as:

  • Glucose.
  • Lactose.
  • Invert sugar.
  • Glucose syrup.
  • Brown sugar.
  • Raw sugar.
  • Black treacle.
  • Fructose.
  • Maltose.
  • Sucrose.
  • Maple syrup.
  • Honey.
  • Molasses.
  • Golden syrup.
  • concentrated fruit juice sweetener.
  • Dextrose.
  • Sorbitol.
  • Levulose.

Set a healthy  example for the young. Avoid soft drinks, sweets, chocolates and other high-sugar
junk foods. And don't stock your fridge with soft drinks and confectionery.

Don't give your children chocolates and sweets as  a form of reward or to show your love
for them. Make vegetables and fruits appealing to children and explain the benefits of these
foods to them.Make them attractive and colourful- children love colours, bright rows of carrots,
green beans, cauliflower "trees" or cookie-shape sandwiches will appeal to children.

Choose food wisely and read food labels to avoid sugar.

Welcome.

What chemicals are added to your food.

Preservatives.
Preservatives are widely used in the food industry to extend the shelf life of food.
With preservaties in it,food can last much longer without going mouldy orbecoming infested with bugs and bacteria. It can be shipped across the world
and kept "fresh" for years.

Unfortunately, the chemical characteristics that make preservatives effective in
killing bacteria and other organisms in food can effect our heath.

- Sulphur dioxide and sulphites.

  •   Sulphur dioxide (E220).
  •   Sodium sulphite (E221).
  •   Sodium bisulphite( E222).
  •   Sodium metabisulphite (E223).
  •   Potassium metabisulphite (E224).
  •   Potassium sulphite (E225).
  •   Calcium sulphite (E226).
  •   Calcium hydrogen sulphite (E 227).
  •   Potasssium bisulphate ( E228).

Sulphur dioxide is a gas that is formed when sulphur burns. It also occurs
naturally. It dissolves in water to form sulphurous acid. The acid form a
series of salts called sulphites and metabisulphates, which are used as food
 preservaties.

Sulphites prevent vegetables and fruit ( including dried fruit like appricots)
from going brown after they have been peeled and keep vegetables looking
fresh even if they are old and stale.

Dried fruit slices can be kept standing for hours in a sulphite solution until
the sulphur dioxide has completely penetrated the slices.sulphites are often
used on french fries in fast-food outlets and restaurants to stop them
going brown after potatoes have been peeled.

The wine industry uses sulphites to stop wine turning to vinegar and
to preserve its colour.Grapes are often fumigated with sulphur dioxide
to prevent fungal growth.Sulphite are also used to prevent yeast and
bacterial growth in food and to stop oils and fats from turning rancid,
thus extending their shelf life.

They are also uses as a colour preservative in seafood such as
shrimp and lobster.

Health effects.
> Sulphur dioxide - linked to mutation and cancer.
> Sulphites - Severe asthma attacks, stomach problems, blured vision
    dizziness,irregular breathing and nervous irritablity.

Welcome,

CAFFEINE.

A drug that is rapidly absorbed into the body. Like other drugs, it has to be detoxified in the body
and excreted. it occurs naturally in tea leaves, coffee beans, cola beans, cola seeds and guarana
(a berry with a natural caffeine content).

It is present in many coffee, tea and guarana drinks, cocoa, hot chocolate and chocolate. It is
also persent in many soft drinks and even some orange and other flavoured drinks.
Most "enegy", "sports" or "smart" drinks contain large quantities of caffeine.

Health effects.
Caffeine is mildly addictive, act as a stimulant  of the central nervous system and
has many other side effect of the body.
Caffeine stimulates the brain and nervous system, the heart, muscle and kidneys.

Useful tips.
> Children should avoid cola drinks "energy" or "soft: drinks  containing caffeine.
>Women should eliminate consumption of coffee and coffeine - containing drinks during
pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
>If you must drink coffee, buy decaffeinated cofee that has been processed with
water, not chemicals.( Methylene chloride, used to decaffeinate coffee, is an acknowledged
carcinogen linked to liver and lung cancer.

Many uses.

Welcome,

PVC clingfilms have many domestic uses.
They are most commanly used for wrapping foods such as sandwiches and for covering
cold foods in a container before storage in a refrigerator.

They are  also used  to wrap cheese, meat, cakes,  etc, before  prolonged storage in
a freezer, or for a lesser period in the  refrigerator.

Some people also use clingfilm to cover food or food containers during cooking
or heating in a microware oven.

In Britian, it was found that some authors of cookery books recemmended
the use of clingfilm for intimate contact with food to be cooked in a
microwave or conventional oven, but this is not recemmended by
the manufactures of the film as many cause softening or even melting
of the film.

Another use of PVC is in the form of bags or casings for the packinging
of meat loaves, pre-cooked chickens, frankfurters and bacon joints.

PVC coating plasticised with  a low level doz (a plasticiser used in
plastics) may also be applied to aluminium foil.

Toxics in plastics.

Welcome,

What plastic is used where.

Low density polyethylene.
Most common plastic. 90 % used as packaging film(eg. polythene bags,
sacks and bin liners, pallet wrap, shrink film).

High density polyethylene.
      Bottles,crates,bottle caps and closures.

Polyethylene terephthalate( pet).
Fizzy drinks bottles, oven-ready meal trays.

Polyethylene.
Tubs for margarine and salads, bottle caps and closures, film
wrappings for biscuits and crisps, sweet wrappings, microware
trays for ready meals, clear jars for pickled onions.

Polystyrene.
Yoghurt pots, clear egg packs, bottle caps, closures, lids,
       wedding cups.

Acrylonitrile buta-diene styrene(abs).
      Lids,tubs for salads and margarines.

Foamed polystyrene.
Food trays, egg boxes, fresh produce cartons.

Polyvinyl chloride (pvc).
Food trays, lids:,cake and sandwich packs,: bottles for fruit squash,
cooking oil, mineral water, shrink wrap,: clingfilm.

SUGAR.

How to look hidden sugar in your food.

SUGAR is a very commonly used ingredient in processed foods. The food industry likes it
because besides adding the sweet taste, it serves as preservative and many other commercial
functions, it adds value for the food procedures but not value to the food for consumers.

Look at the ingredient listing and see where sugar appears. If it is listed amongst the
top  few items, it show that a lot  of sugar is likely to be added. The ingredient list shows the ingredients used  in a decending order.

Sugar appears in our foods with many names and in many forms.Listed below are the
different `names' for sugar:

Hearing problem-otitis media.

Sugar can speed up the ageing process, causing wrinkles and grey hair.
According to an article in natural parent over-consumption of sugar is the most common
cause of otitis media, an inflammation of the middle ear(between the eardrum and inner
ear).

Sugar suppresses immunity, giving bacteria the edge.High sugar consumption can also
promote hypoglycaemia(a sudden drop in blood sugar.)The body would react by releasing
adrenaline causing the blood vessel to narrow and affect hearing .
